Uncle Tom finds out that he has been sold. Even though he can escape, he is a loyal person and will not betray his master, Mr. Shelby. Tom is then taken by Mr. Haley, a slave trader, towards New Orleans. He makes friends with Evangeline "Eva" St. Clare. Her father buys him as a coachman and as Eva's personal slave. Tom is very lucky to work for a nice man like St. Clare and a friend like Eva. Tom and Eva constantly share their faith in god with one another. Tom is shown to be a very kind and hardworking man, as when Eva grows to weak to walk all over the plantation, Tom carries her. After Eva's death and St. Clare promising Tom his freedom, he imagines the possibilities he can have as a free man, such as buying his wife, Chloe, and his children. St. Clare, unfortunately, dies from trying to dispute a fight. Tom is later sold to a cruel man called Simon Legree. Legree tries to constantly break Tom, but he refuses to be broken. Legree eventually beats Tom so badly that he dies. Tom is buried under a tree. He is mourned by his family and the family of his old master, Mr. Shelby. Stowe uses Tom as a character to show the suffering slaves had to go through, no matter how faithful or loyal they were. Stowe also tried to make Tom an ideal character so that the audience could sympathize with him.
