Topsy is one of the most notable characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin, despite the short amount of time she appeared in. She is a cunning girl who didn't have any education growing up. Augustine St. Clare decides to buy Topsy from a restaurant that she worked at and gives her to Miss Ophelia for instruction. She later on tells Miss Ophelia that she's wicked. Before she was bought by St. Clare, she was raised by her masters to believe that she is bad. It is soon revealed why St. Clare gave Topsy to Miss Ophelia. Miss Ophelia, throughout the time she appeared in, has been shown to be a strong abolitionist, but she reveals that she dislikes interacting with black people. Even with Miss Ophelia's teachings, Topsy does not change until she is hugged by Eva. Once Topsy sees that even she can be loved, she begins to change for the better. After Eva's death, Topsy is greatly saddened that there is no one left to love her. Miss Ophelia afterwards talks to Topsy and says the she will learn to love her. When St. Clare dies, Miss Ophelia returns to Vermont with Topsy and Topsy becomes a good Christian.
