Uncle Tom meets Eva on a boat headed to the South. She tells Tom that she is hoping her father will buy him. Eva later almost drowns but Tom saves him. Eva soon insists to her father to buy Tom. St. Clare does and Eva and Tom become fast friends. Eva considers the family slaves as part of the family and treats them like it, loving them all dearly. Eva soon begins to realize that her death is drawing near, she begins to do things such as teaching Mammy, a slave in the household, how to read. She even becomes friends with Topsy and changes her for the better just by loving her. Eva manages to get her father to agree with her that, after she dies, to set Tom free. As she realizes that it's almost time, Eva calls all the slaves together to tell them that she loves them and to all be good Christians. She also gives each of them a lock of her hair. Stowe uses her character to show that Christians should love, not to be strict like Miss Ophelia.
