Eliza ,a very devout Christian, discovers that her son, Harry, is to be sold. Later on, her husband, George, tells her he plans on escaping to Canada and that he will buy Eliza and Harry so they can be free. Later on, Eliza overhears that there is no stopping her son being sold. She quickly decides to flee with Harry to Canada. She eventually reaches the Ohio river, and finds out that there is no ferries going across because of ice. She decides to stay the night because she found out one man is trying to cross the river that night. Unfortunately, she finds out slave catchers are in the town, and she cannot afford to stay. She successfully attempts at crossing the river by going on the ice. She is taken to a house by kind folk. A Senator and his wife happen to live in this house, and despite the Senator helping to pass a law that makes it illegal to help runaways, he helps Eliza anyways. Eliza and Harry soon end up with anti - slavery Quakers. George soon comes to this camp and the family is reunited once again. To get to Canada though, Eliza cuts her hair short and disguises herself as a man. She reaches Canada safely with her family. Years later, she is reunited with her mother, Cassy. One of the reasons Stowe put Eliza in the novel was because she lost her son and could sympathize with slaves that lost their children because of slave trade.
